The Cartographer's Codex

You hold the only maps to the world's rarest minerals—and the tycoon who needs them is hiding a secret that could destroy him.

Your grandfather left you a collection of hand-drawn maps, each pinpointing a mineral deposit of impossible value. Now a reclusive mining tycoon offers to save your orphanage—if you'll help him find a legendary vein beneath his rival's mountain. But as you decipher each map, you uncover secrets that could turn you from his indispensable ally into his greatest threat. To save the children you love, you must decide: trust the man who needs you, or expose the truth that could bring his empire down.

The story begins

The ledger lay open on your desk, the red ink of the final notice a raw wound against the paper. Outside, the city glittered below the glass tower of Vane Industries, a monolith of wealth that made your own crumbling walls feel like a cardboard box. You traced your grandfather’s map, the aged parchment cool and rough, its ink lines fading into a cryptic web you’d spent years failing to fully unravel. The orphanage’s foreclosure date was a drumbeat in your chest.

A knock, sharp and deliberate, echoed through the hallway. You opened the door to find a man in a tailored coat, his eyes pale and assessing, holding a briefcase that smelled of new leather and old money. “Miss Hartwell sends her regards,” he said, his voice flat. “She believes you have something that belongs to her. A map. The one your grandfather never finished.”

Your heart slammed against your ribs. The map was in your hand, a secret you’d kept close. But how did she know? Before you could answer, a figure moved in the shadows behind him—tall, broad-shouldered, his face half-obscured. Alistair Vane. He stepped forward, his gaze fixed on the parchment, a hunger in his eyes that had nothing to do with business.

“I’ll make you a deal,” he said, his voice low and smooth. “That map—and everything it leads to—could save your orphanage. Or bury it.”

What happens next is up to you.
