Terms of Service

1. Who we are

SecretNovel ("we", "us") provides interactive fiction at secretnovel.com — stories written with the help of artificial intelligence that adapt to the choices you make. By creating an account or using the service, you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you don't agree, please don't use the service.

2. You must be an adult

SecretNovel is for adults. You must be at least 18 years old (or the age of majority where you live, if higher) to create an account or use the service. Stories may contain mature themes, including romantic and suggestive content, intended for adult readers.

3. The service

SecretNovel is currently free to use, with fair-use limits (such as a daily number of story generations) that we may adjust at any time. We may introduce paid features in the future; nothing free today is promised to stay free forever, and we'll communicate changes clearly. The service is under active development — features may change, be added, or be removed.

4. Your account

Accounts are accessed with sign-in links sent to your email address, so keep access to that address secure — anyone who can read your email can access your account. You're responsible for activity that happens under your account. One account per person; automated account creation is prohibited.

5. AI-generated content

Story text is generated by artificial intelligence in response to your choices and input. It is fiction. It may occasionally be inaccurate, incoherent, or produce content you didn't expect — no generated content represents our views, real people, real events, or advice of any kind. You direct the story: content that appears in your stories is shaped by the choices and text you provide. If a story produces something inappropriate, stop and contact us so we can improve the service.

6. Acceptable use

When using SecretNovel, you must not:

  • attempt to create content that sexualizes minors, or any content that is illegal where you live or where we operate — this results in immediate termination and, where appropriate, reports to authorities;
  • use the service to harass, defame, or generate content about real people;
  • access the service by automated means, scrape it, resell it, probe or overload it, or circumvent usage limits (including by creating multiple accounts);
  • reverse engineer the service or use it to build a competing dataset.

7. Your stories

We don't claim ownership of the stories you create. You grant us the license we need to operate the service — to store your stories, generate continuations, and display them back to you. Your stories are private to your account; we don't publish them. We may review content flagged by users or systems in order to enforce these terms.

8. Termination

You can delete your account at any time from the account page, which permanently removes your stories and data. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms, and may discontinue the service (or parts of it) with reasonable notice where practical.

9. Disclaimers and liability

The service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, and our total liability for any claim relating to the service is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim (currently nothing) or $50. Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot be excluded by law.

10. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the service evolves. Material changes will be flagged on the site or by email. Continuing to use the service after changes take effect means you accept the updated terms.
