The Cartographer's Execution

You witness a royal cartographer erase an island from the charts—and now the admiral knows you saw.

You are a village archivist who has stumbled upon a royal cartographer's secret: he has been ordered to erase a thriving island from the official charts, a crime punished by drowning. But that island hides a treasure that could save your starving village. The cartographer is dead—and the admiral commanding the expedition saw you witness his execution. Now, you must sail with the man who could kill you at any moment, searching for a treasure that may not exist, all while deciding whether to betray the crown or your own people.

The story begins

The executioner’s drum rolled once, and the crowd on the quay fell silent. You stood at the edge of the press, ink-stained fingers gripping the splintered rail, watching the royal cartographer—your friend, your mentor—kneel on the wet stones with a hood over his head. The tide was rising. They always timed it to the tide.

His bound hands found yours in the crush of bodies. Not a plea. A transfer. A scrap of oiled leather, folded to the size of a thumbnail, slipped into your palm. His voice, cracked and low: “The sea remembers what the ink denies.”

Then the drum rolled again, and the water took him.

You felt the map burn against your skin. When you looked up, Admiral Voss stood ten paces away, sea-glass eyes fixed on your fist. He did not call for guards. He did not draw steel. He simply walked toward you, boots ringing on the stone, and said, low enough that only you could hear:

“You’ll sail with me at dawn, archivist. Or I’ll have you drowned beside him for what you’re holding.”

What happens next is up to you.
