The Gilded Cage

Mature

You're a counterfeiter caught red-handed, and the billionaire who caught you won't let you go.

As a master forger, you've always stayed one step ahead of the law—until you're caught by Julian Ashworth, the enigmatic billionaire who owns everything but his own secrets. Instead of calling the police, he offers you a devil's bargain: become his personal assistant and work off your debt. But as you're forced into his opulent world of art, power, and obsession, you realize Julian is playing a game with stakes far higher than money—and the only way out is to beat him at his own game.

The story begins

The laser grid hummed in the dark, a faint red web strung between the Renoirs and the Klimts. You slipped through the last beam with a counterfeiter's grace, the night-vision goggles painting the penthouse gallery in ghostly greens. Ashworth's pride—a Caravaggio, shadowed and raw—hung before you, its canvas singing with age.

Your gloved fingers brushed the frame. Two minutes to lift it, thirty seconds to swap the forgery coiled in your backpack. The pigment was flawless, the craquelure perfect. You'd spent a month on this piece, starving for it.

A sound. Low. Deliberate.

You turned, and the lights blazed to life. Julian Ashworth stood ten feet away in a charcoal suit, one hand in his pocket, the other holding a glass of scotch. He wasn't startled. He was watching, patient as a cat at a mouse hole.

"Don't bother reaching for the tranquilizer," he said, his voice smooth as silk over steel. "My security has had you bracketed since the elevator. I wanted to see how far you'd get."

He took a sip, and his eyes held yours—not with anger, but with something far more dangerous. Fascination.

"Who trained you? Because it wasn't Delgado's usual crew. They're crude. You're… artful."

What happens next is up to you.
