The Last Reefcaller

Your voice can calm the storm—if you survive the elder's game.

You are the last person who can sing the storm-swallowed reef into calm, a gift that died with your mentor. But now the sea holds your brother captive, and the only way to reach him is to return to the island you fled—and face the bitter elder who exiled you. She demands a price: pretend to be her apprentice's lover to infiltrate the reef-dwellers' inner circle. As your voice fades with each passing day, you must master the ancient song and prove your loyalty before the tide claims your brother. This is a story of survival, forbidden love, and the power of voice in a world that's lost its chorus.

The story begins

The salt spray stung your cheeks as you crested the final dune, the cove below a black wound in the storm-gray sea. Your boots sank into wet sand, and there—half-submerged in a tide pool, a flash of silver—was the marker. Your mentor's old knife, rusted now, driven into the rock like a grave.

You hadn't been back in seven years. The guilt was a stone in your chest, heavier than the pack on your back.

The wind howled, and the water churned, as if the reef itself remembered you. Then you saw it: a cage, just visible beneath the surface, and inside it, a pale shape. Your brother.

A shout cut through the gale. A figure emerged from the sea caves, spear in hand, face carved from the same stone as the cliff.

"You," Kael said, and his voice held something between recognition and warning. "Maris said you'd come crawling back."

Your gift hummed in your throat, raw and thin—a dying ember. You had days, maybe hours, before it went out forever.

What happens next is up to you.
