The Masquerade Heist

Mature

You came to steal a masterpiece—now you're the one being stolen.

You're a world-class art thief, hired to lift a priceless Vermeer from a billionaire's private gallery during his masquerade gala. But when you find the painting already swapped for a fake—and the billionaire catches you red-handed—he offers you a deal: marry him under a contract-marriage to expose the real thief, or face prison. Now you're trapped in his penthouse, trying to unravel whether he's the mark, the mastermind, or something far more dangerous. With every stolen glance and whispered secret, you must decide: trust the man who holds your future, or play the game your way.

The story begins

The champagne flute trembled in your gloved hand as you angled your body toward the Vermeer, its surface gleaming under the gallery's spotlights. You'd studied this painting for months—every brushstroke, every whisper of light on the woman's pearl. And now, at three feet away, you knew.

Forgery.

The brushwork was too mechanical, the canvas aging too uniform. Whoever had swapped it had done beautiful work, but beautiful wasn't perfect. You'd staked your reputation on this job, and someone had beaten you to the prize.

A hand closed over your elbow—firm, deliberate. You didn't flinch; you'd been trained not to. But your pulse quickened as a low voice murmured against your ear, close enough to feel the warmth of his breath.

"Admiring the craftsmanship, or the forgery?"

You turned to face Alexander Kade, his dark eyes unreadable behind the masquerade mask. He smiled, but there was no warmth in it.

"I collect what's authentic," he continued, his grip tightening. "And I know exactly what you are, Mr. Sterling. The question is—what do we do about it?"

What happens next is up to you.
