The Price of Return

Mature

You came home to bury your grandmother, but the billionaire who owns your street wants the truth you've kept for a decade.

After a decade away, you return to your hometown to lay your grandmother to rest, only to discover the man who once broke your heart has bought every property on the street—including yours. He offers to sell it back, but the price isn't money: it's the truth about why you left, and the child he never knew existed. With your past and future hanging in the balance, you must decide how much of yourself you're willing to sacrifice to reclaim your home. A second-chance romance filled with secrets, longing, and the unbreakable bonds of family.

The story begins

The rain hadn’t stopped since you crossed the county line, a gray drizzle that soaked the black wool of your dress and streaked the grime from the headstones. You stood alone under the bare oak at the edge of the cemetery, watching the last mourners drift toward their cars. The coffin had been lowered an hour ago, and still you hadn’t moved, your grandmother’s name—Elena Marsh—carved fresh in the granite, the dirt around it dark and wet.

Your daughter tugged at your sleeve. “Mom, I’m cold.”

You looked down at her, at the brightness of her eyes under the hood of her jacket, and felt the familiar ache of keeping her safe from everything you’d never told her. “One more minute,” you said softly. “Then we’ll go.”

The voice came from behind you, low and familiar, and it turned your blood to ice.

“I’m sorry about Elena. She was the best of us.”

You turned. Elias Vance stood ten feet away, rain darkening the shoulders of his expensive coat, his face unreadable in the gray light. His gaze flickered to the child at your side, then back to you—and something in it caught, sharpened, held.

What happens next is up to you.
