The Unbroken Vow
MatureYou swore an oath to a warlord—now breaking it will cost you everything.
Your family sold you into a sacred contract to save their village from famine, binding you to a reclusive warlord. But when you arrive at his mountain fortress, you find a man haunted by his own demons, not the monster of legend. The vow you swore has teeth: break it and you'll age decades in a single night, and only he can sever the bond—if he chooses to. But can you trust a man who's killed for loyalty, and what will you sacrifice to break free from a fate you never chose?
The story begins
The cart jolted to a halt, and the iron gate of the fortress swallowed the last of the grey daylight. You had been counting the stones in the wall—a hundred and forty-seven—when a hand closed around your wrist, not rough, but unyielding. Lord Kaelen stood there, his face all sharp shadows in the torchlight, and the mark on your skin, the blood-oath sigil, throbbed like a second heartbeat.
"You flinched," he said, his voice a low rasp that carried no warmth but also no cruelty. "Good. Fear keeps the blood moving."
He released you, and you noticed the way his fingers lingered a half-breath too long. Behind him, the Seer watched from the archway, ancient eyes catching the fire, and farther down the hall, a woman with white hair and hollow cheeks—Elsbeth—stared not at you, but through the stone, as if she could already see the year passing over your face.
Kaelen turned his back to you, exposing it without hesitation. "You'll have the east tower room. The view of the valley. So you can see what your family bought."
The cold settled into your bones, and the mark burned hotter.
