The Charnel House Legacy

Mature

You dig the graves beneath a dying noble house—until the dead name you their heir.

You are a porter and grave-digger in the vast estate of House Vael, hauling the honored dead to the charnel pits below. When the patriarch dies, his will—sealed in a trap-laden crypt only you can enter—reveals you as the true heir, setting every servant and noble against you. Now you must survive the politics of the living and the secrets of the dead, all while carrying the weight of a legacy that was never meant to be yours. Can you claim your birthright without becoming another corpse in the pits?

The story begins

The lantern guttered as you pried the last seal from the crypt door, the smell of old wax and colder stone filling your lungs. Behind you, the Seneschal’s footsteps had stopped at the top of the stair—he wouldn’t descend. No one descended. Only you could walk these pits without the floor remembering their weight.

The will was a roll of parchment bound in black silk, tucked behind a ribcage arranged like a saint’s relic. You took it, and the silence shifted. Somewhere deeper, a bone clicked against stone. You knew that sound. It wasn’t a trap.

When you broke the seal and read the first line, the air left you as if the crypt had stolen it. To the child of my blood, hidden in the earth, I leave the house and all its debts.

Your hands shook once, then steadied. You are the gravedigger. You are the heir. And above you, the Seneschal was waiting with a smile that never reached his eyes.

What happens next is up to you.
