The Hollow Man's Return

The cold bit through your coat as you crested the last ridge, the village sprawled below like a wound that had never healed. Five years gone, and you'd told yourself you'd never look back—but the letter, with its smeared ink and desperate slant, had pulled you through the drifts like a hook in the gut.

Now you saw why.

The cocoon wasn't a thing of silk or web. It was a membrane, translucent and trembling, stretched over every roof and wall, pulsing with a slow, rhythmic beat. The air thickened with the smell of it—rotting honey, wet earth, something alive and wrong.

You moved through the gap where the old gate had been, boots crunching on frost that didn't melt. The village was silent. Not the silence of sleep, but of held breath.

Then you saw her.

Mara stood in the center of the square, her back to you, her breath fogging the air. She hadn't changed—still the same frayed coat, the same stubborn set to her shoulders. But when she turned, her eyes held a fear you'd never seen in her before.

"You came back," she said, voice cracking. "After all this time. You came back to die with the rest of us."

Behind her, something pale and glistening slid between the houses. It paused. It turned toward you.
