The Constructed Life

You thought your life was ordinary—until you learn it was his design.

You live a quiet life above a bookshop, with a job you love and a friend who happens to be a billionaire. But when you uncover that every detail—your landlord, your regulars, even your favorite café—was arranged by him to keep you safe, your world shatters. Furious and trapped, you face an impossible choice: walk away from the only life you've known, or stay as a puppet in his gilded cage. A slow-burn romance about trust, control, and the price of protection.

The story begins

The ledger hit the scarred oak desk with a thud that sent dust motes spinning through the afternoon light slanting through the bookshop's window. Your fingers traced the cracked leather spine, the embossed initials J.W. — Julian's initials. You'd found it behind the loose floorboard in the back office, the one Mara always told you not to worry about.

Your breath caught as you flipped through page after page of neat, meticulous handwriting. Rent — paid in full, 2019. Café Allegro — monthly stipend, ongoing. Mr. Henderson, corner market — quarterly bonus.

Every name was familiar. Every name was your life.

The bell above the door chimed, and you heard Mara's voice call out, "Darling? You left the kettle on."

You didn't answer. Your fingers pressed against the ink, smudging it, as if you could blur the truth back into fiction.

Footsteps approached. Then silence.

"Oh, sweetheart," Mara breathed, her voice cracking. "You weren't supposed to find that yet."

The afternoon light felt colder now, sharpening the edges of every shadow in the room. Somewhere across the street, you knew Julian was watching — he always was, weren't he?

What happens next is up to you.
