The Echo of the Final Word

Mature

Speak the last words of a dead language to open the way—but every word costs your child's life.

You are the last living speaker of a language that can command stone to rise and rivers to turn. The empire that eradicated your people has unearthed a labyrinth, and only you can shape it into a path to the treasure within. But each word you speak shortens the life of the child you carry, and at the maze's heart lies the tomb of your ancestors. Will you sacrifice everything for the chance to reclaim what was stolen, or let the empire's greed go unanswered?

The story begins

The sun hammered the back of your neck as soldiers flanked you across the cracked earth, their boots crunching in unison. Ahead, the labyrinth's mouth yawned open in the sandstone—a black wound in the desert's flesh, older than the empire itself. The Warden walked beside you, his armor gleaming, his smile thin as a blade.

"Speak the first word," he said. "Open it."

Your hand drifted to your belly. The child stirred—a faint flutter, like a moth against a window. You felt the cost of that single word already coiling in your throat, a weight that pulled at something deeper than breath.

The Archivist trailed behind, tablet clutched to her chest. Her eyes met yours for a heartbeat. Something passed between you—a warning, or a plea.

The soldiers' spears glinted. The Warden waited.

The maze hummed beneath your feet, patient, hungry, alive.

What happens next is up to you.
