The Mirage of Command
You carry a legend's name and a courier's lies—now walk through a living maze before your followers learn the truth.
In a world where a single blade can rewrite history, you're a simple courier mistaken for the legendary Vanguard of the Shattered Dawn. The real Vanguard is dead, your identity is a sham, and the Forbidden Oasis's ancient guardians demand the true blood to open their gates. Now you lead a desperate expedition through a shifting labyrinth of sentient stone and whispering sand, inventing miracles with every step while hoping no one asks for a display of power. Survival, betrayal, and the ultimate question—can a lie become a truth if you believe it hard enough?
The story begins
The wind screamed across the Shattered Expanse, flinging shards of glass against your borrowed cloak. You pressed your palm flat against the bronze door of the First Gate, feeling the cold hum of ancient machinery vibrating through your bones. Behind you, the expedition held its breath—thirty souls, their eyes fixed on the Vanguard's mantle draped across your shoulders.
Seren stepped closer, her voice a blade wrapped in silk. "The Vanguard spoke the old words to open gates. You've said nothing."
You turned to face her, letting the wind whip the hood back from your face. "The Vanguard didn't waste breath on ceremony. He listened first." You tapped the bronze with two fingers, the way you'd seen the old man do a hundred times in campfires and dying light. "The gate tells you what it wants."
The mechanism groaned. Somewhere deep within the maze, something shifted—a sound like a thousand glass teeth grinding together. Kael's hand flew to his sword, but you held up a palm.
"Wait."
The bronze door split, not with a roar, but with a whisper. Beyond it, the maze stretched into darkness, its walls glinting like frozen lightning. Seren's eyes narrowed, unconvinced. Kael's burned with faith.
One of them was going to get you killed. The other might save you.
