The Gardener's Grid

You tend the city's gardens, but the soil hides a machine that grows your whole world.

You are the quiet keeper of the city's greenhouse, tending plants that bloom under a benevolent sun-spirit. But after a brutal drought, you uncover a terrible truth: every leaf, every frost, even the gods themselves are engineered by an underground machine. To save the city from famine, you must venture into the machine's heart and transplant its secret—a journey into the depths of a manufactured world where nothing is as it seems. Will you uproot the lies that sustain your city, or let it wither?

The story begins

The watering can slipped from your fingers, clattering against the stone floor of Greenhouse Seven. The sound echoed too loud in the silence. You knelt, your knees pressing into the damp earth, and touched the withered stem of the moonflower vine. It crumbled at your touch—dry as ash, though you had watered it that very morning.

Your fingers brushed something cold beneath the soil. Metal. You scraped away the dirt, heart hammering, and revealed a thin, black root of polished steel, impossibly smooth, snaking down into the earth. It pulsed faintly, like a vein carrying something alive.

You had tended these plants for eight years. You knew every leaf, every bloom, every shadow they cast in the afternoon sun. This was not part of the garden. This was not part of anything you understood.

A low hum rose from beneath the floor, vibrating up through your hands. The greenhouse door groaned on its hinges, though the air was still.

What happens next is up to you.
