The Gilded Race
MatureEnter a deadly race to win your village's freedom—but the course is rigged, and every step is a trap.

But the race is a game rigged against you, with obstacles designed to break you and rivals who are pawns of the sponsor. The impossible choice: trust no one, or risk everything for an alliance that might be your only chance. An adventure of survival, betrayal, and the price of freedom.
The story begins
The horn’s blast was a physical thing, a wave of sound that shoved you forward with the rest of the desperate tide. Dust, sweat, and the reek of unwashed bodies filled your mouth as you broke into a run, your pack slapping against your spine. Around you, a thousand other fools surged toward the same thin ribbon of canyon that marked the first leg of the course.
You dodged a stumbling man, felt the graze of someone’s elbow, and kept your eyes fixed on the jagged rock wall ahead. The Sponsor’s masked face hung in your mind, a pale oval above the crowd, its blank eyes promising nothing but the race. Your village’s debt was a stone in your chest, heavier than the pack.
A flash of movement to your left. A woman with a leather map case and a too-bright smile kept pace with you. “First-timer?” she called, her voice carrying over the thunder of boots. “You’re running too tight. The mountain will eat you alive if you don’t learn to breathe.”
You didn’t answer. Ahead, the canyon mouth swallowed the first runners, and a scream echoed back, sharp and brief.
