The Heirloom Negotiation

Mature

You've authenticated his masterpiece's forgery—now you must survive the truth in a war zone.

As a forensic art historian, you've seen it all—but nothing prepares you for the day a billionaire's prized acquisition turns out to be a fake. The real painting? It's hidden in a crumbling city held by a warlord demanding a fortune. When the billionaire insists you join him on a dangerous retrieval mission, you discover the painting's provenance is tied to his murdered father. Now you're risking your life and your heart in a place where every shadow hides a threat, and the only man who can keep you alive is hiding secrets of his own. An enemies-to-lovers slow-burn fraught with peril, where the value of art pales next to the cost of truth.

The story begins

The jeep's engine coughed as Julian cut it, and the sudden silence was thicker than the dust settling over the windshield. You were out before he was, boots hitting rubble-strewn ground, the half-ruined gallery's bullet-pocked facade looming ahead. Your contact was supposed to meet you inside—if the warlord's patrols hadn't gotten to him first.

Julian caught your elbow, his grip warm even through the linen of your jacket. "We go in fast," he said, low, that unsettling calm of his filling the space between you. "No heroics."

"Heroics are your department," you shot back, pulling free. "I'm just here for the painting." But your pulse was already climbing, and not all of it was the risk. You'd spent three weeks hating Julian Crane—his charm, his riddles, his father's shadow—and every hour of it had done nothing to lessen the strange, electric pull of him.

The gallery door hung crooked on its hinges. A single shot echoed from somewhere deeper inside.

What happens next is up to you.
