The Oath-Bound Cartographer

You draw only truth, but the map that could stop a war is a lie.

You are an oath-bound cartographer, sworn to map only the truth. Your latest commission is a map to a legendary treasure—but your patron intends to use it to ignite a war. The magic binding your oath will strip your memories if you draw a false line, yet the map you refuse to draw may be the only way to stop him. With every stroke of your quill, you risk losing yourself—but inaction could doom a kingdom. The choice is yours: draw the lie and lose your mind, or refuse and lose the world.

The story begins

The quill hovered over the vellum, ink beading at its tip like a held breath. The Patron’s study smelled of beeswax and old promises, and his voice had the smooth weight of a man accustomed to being obeyed.

“The route must be precise, Cartographer. Every ford, every ridge. The King’s treasure will not wait for a fumbled line.”

You had mapped a hundred roads, but this one felt wrong in your bones. The landmarks he described—a burnt chapel, a crooked oak, a river that ran silver at dusk—they didn’t connect. They couldn’t. The geometry of the land itself rebelled, and your oath burned beneath your sternum like a coal, insisting on truth.

“I’ll verify the terrain,” you said, setting the quill down. “The oath demands it.”

The Patron’s smile didn’t reach his eyes. “Take my herald with you. He knows the way.”

The door opened, and the Herald stepped in—your rival, thin-lipped, carrying a leather satchel. His gaze flicked to your ink-stained fingers with something like hunger.

What happens next is up to you.
