The Steward's Descent

You're the lowest servant in the duke's house, but the dungeon below holds the key to your freedom.

You've spent years as the lowest-ranked servant in Duke Verath's household, enduring his cruelty and dreaming of the day you can buy your family's freedom. Tonight, you're ordered to clean the deepest cellar—a sealed dungeon that hasn't been opened in centuries. When you find a dying explorer who whispers that the duke's fortune is a lie, you realize the dungeon holds the key to everything you've ever wanted. But the dungeon is alive, and it demands a price for its secrets. Will you risk everything to steal the truth that can set you free?

The story begins

The masquerade's distant laughter filtered through the stone like the memory of a dream, a thousand gilded lies echoing down the kitchen stairs. You pressed the coarse cloth of your sleeve against the cut on your palm, wincing as the blood soaked through. The duke's boot had connected with your ribs twice before he'd sent you down here—a minor infraction, he'd called it. Spilled wine on his velvet sleeve. Your family's debt had been the unspoken weight behind every blow.

The cellar stretched before you, a catacomb of forgotten casks and dust-sheeted furniture. But it was the draft that made you pause—cold, sharp, smelling of old stone and something metallic. Iron. Your fingers found the loose stone at the back of the wine rack, the one you'd noticed months ago while scrubbing. It gave way with a groan, revealing a dark passage that yawned like a hungry mouth.

You stepped through, and the wall slid shut behind you with a soft click.

The passage opened into a chamber of ancient stone, and there—slumped against the far wall, a dark stain spreading across her leather tunic—was a woman. Her face was pale, her breath ragged, but her eyes snapped open at your footstep.

"About time," she rasped, a grim smile twisting her lips. "The duke's dog, come to sniff. Or..." she coughed, blood flecking her chin, "someone who wants a way out."

What happens next is up to you.
