The Unwanted Empire

Mature

You inherited a fleet of enemies—and the one man who knows the truth.

When your father dies, you inherit his crumbling shipping empire and its legion of enemies—including the rival billionaire, Julian Kade, who wants it demolished. But the will forces you to keep the company alive for a year to claim it, and Julian is the only one who knows who truly sabotaged your father's fleet. As you fight to save the legacy, you must decide: trust the man who wants to destroy you, or lose everything you never wanted in the first place.

The story begins

The mahogany table was a shipwreck, and you were drowning in its polished surface. Above you, the boardroom's glass walls offered a panorama of the harbor, where the gulls screamed over rusting cranes, mocking the empire your father had let rot.

You gripped the armrests of the chair that had once been his. The lawyer's drone was the only sound, a eulogy for a company already dead. Then a voice cut through the air like a blade, sharp and amused.

"Missed the part about the anchor chain," it said. "Let me guess: a year of this, and you're out. Free and clear."

You looked up. Julian Kade stood in the doorway, a tailored shadow against the sunlit glass. He didn't belong here, not in this room of mourning and debt. He moved with the ease of a man who owned the port, and the contempt in his eyes was a physical weight.

The lawyer sputtered. You didn't.

"Who the hell are you?" you asked.

He smiled. It didn't reach his eyes. "The man who knows why your father's ships sank."

The room fell silent. The clock on the wall ticked, a heart beating over a corpse, and you felt the first cold ripple of the tide you'd just stepped into.

What happens next is up to you.
