The Cartographer's Gambit

Every line you draw becomes reality in the shifting wastes—choose your strokes carefully.

You are the best rubble-reader in the wastes, hired to map a forgotten highway for a water baron. But the route cuts through the Shifting Reach, where the ground moves and your ink reshapes the world. When you sketch a bridge to cross a chasm, it seals instantly—trapping the baron's rival on the far side. Now you're a liability with the power to redraw the war map in anyone's favor, and every faction wants your hand. With your own ink as your only weapon, you must navigate a web of betrayal and survival—one wrong line could end the water war or erase you from existence.

The story begins

The charcoal in your fingers snapped. Dust and grit clung to the paper as the wind tried to tear it from the rock. You pressed your palm flat against the bridge sketch, the rough surface biting into your skin, and watched the chasm groan. Stone ground against stone, a sound like the earth itself chewing. The bridge you'd drawn on paper was now a solid span of rust-red rockwork, arching over the gap where there had been nothing but empty air moments before.

Voss's voice was a low, dangerous purr from behind you. "Well, well." You felt his shadow fall over your shoulder, blocking the merciless sun. "I thought you were just good with a pen."

Your heart hammered against your ribs. You'd been so careful. Three days, and not a single drawing that mattered — just contour lines and landmarks, harmless. But the chasm was too wide, the detour too long, and you'd been tired. Tired of his suspicion, tired of the heat, tired of the way Sable watched you from the rocks like she knew something.

Now Kael's war party was stranded on the far side, trapped on a ledge with a wall of your making between them and their escape. And you'd just painted a target on your own back.

"Get up," Voss said, his hand closing around your arm. His grip was iron. "We have a lot to talk about."

Across the chasm, a figure rose from behind a boulder — tall, dark hair whipping in the wind. Kael. He raised a hand, not in surrender, but in a slow, deliberate salute. His voice carried across the gap, rough with dust and irony.

"Nice bridge, cartographer. You'll have to teach me that trick."

What happens next is up to you.
