The Orphan's Mosaic

Mature

You were raised in a workhouse, but a dying stranger's map reveals your face in every shrine of a dead empire—and the matron's agents are closing in.

You grew up in the Graybriar workhouse, a place of gruel and numb routine run by the smiling, ever-watchful Matron. But when a dying traveler presses a tattered map into your hands, you see your own face painted in the mosaics of a forgotten empire—and the truth shatters everything you knew. The orphanage wasn't charity; it was a breeding ground for the key to a lost treasure, and the matron has sent her agents to reclaim what you're only beginning to understand. Every step of your journey across the wasteland brings you closer to the empire's secret, but the matron's hunters are never far behind. Will you uncover the truth before they bury it—and you—for good? A gritty, survival-driven quest for fans of dark adventure and hidden identity.

The story begins

The ash-flecked wind tore at your threadbare coat as you skidded down the gravel embankment, the dead traveler's map crinkling against your chest. Behind you, the workhouse bell clanged once—a sound you'd heard every dawn of your nineteen years, but never like this. Never as a summons for your capture.

You hit the creek bed hard, stones biting through your worn boots. Water, brown and sluggish, soaked the hem of your trousers. You pressed yourself against the embankment's cold earth, breath ragged, and listened.

Footsteps. Two sets, heavy. Silas's voice, low and patient: "She's heading for the old shrine road. Circle wide."

The other voice, Jasper's, cracked with something you refused to name—loyalty or betrayal: "The map. She'll have it on her."

Your fingers found the hilt of the small knife you'd stolen from the kitchen, its weight a familiar comfort. The map had shown your face, painted in faded gold on a shrine wall older than the empire itself. You didn't know what that meant. You only knew you had to find out.

Hoofbeats thundered somewhere beyond the ridge. They weren't alone.

What happens next is up to you.
