The Cartographer's Last Chimera

Mature

You map the unmappable, but the dungeon is mapping you back.

You are the finest dungeon cartographer alive, hired to chart the Spire of the Storm, a legendary dungeon that has claimed every explorer who entered it. As you delve deeper, the dungeon begins to rewrite your maps, your memory, and your very sense of self. The walls shift, echoing your own thoughts, and you realize the real job isn't to map the dungeon—it's to escape the monster that hired you. But the monster is inside your head, and the only way out is to unmap yourself.

The story begins

The quill scratched across the vellum, but the ink was wrong. You’d mixed it yourself—lampblack and iron gall, the same recipe that had never failed in two hundred mapped chambers. Yet the line you were drawing shimmered a sickly green, and the corridor you were tracing twisted back on itself on the page, a loop that didn’t exist in the stone in front of you.

You blinked. The map on your knee showed a room you hadn’t drawn: a circular chamber, a dais at its center, a figure. You hadn’t blinked that into being. The Spire was rewriting your work, and worse, it was rewriting the part of you that remembered drawing it.

“Trouble, Cartographer?” The Collector’s voice came from behind, smooth as oil on water. You didn’t turn.

“The map’s lying,” you said, and the words tasted like a confession you didn’t fully understand.

The air pressure dropped. Somewhere above, thunder rolled through stone that had no sky. The quill in your hand twitched, and the figure on the dais in your drawing turned its head—toward you.

What happens next is up to you.
