The Cartographer's Last Job

You chart the Spire of Nails, but every door you map seals behind you—escape demands a beautiful lie.

You are the world's finest dungeon-cartographer, hired to map the newly unearthed Spire of Nails. But your patron has vanished, and each door you chart locks behind you. The walls rewrite themselves to match your maps, and the only way out is to map a lie. With your trusty assistant and a rival who knows too much, can you outplot a living labyrinth that feeds on truth?

The story begins

The brass stylus scratched against the vellum, and the wall in front of you rippled—a sound like sand shifting through a sieve, the stone itself rearranging to match the line you’d just drawn. The corridor you’d mapped five minutes ago now curved left, exactly as you’d sketched it. Exactly as you’d lied about it.

You didn’t look back. You’d learned three hours ago not to look back.

The Assistant stood behind you, lantern held steady, their breath a faint condensation in the cold. They hadn’t spoken since the Patron’s study turned out to be a wall of solid basalt. You’d mapped it true, and the Spire had sealed it like a wound.

“The ink’s drying faster,” the Assistant said. Quiet. Observant. You’d hired them for that.

You dipped the stylus again, feeling the faint tremor beneath your boots—the whole dungeon humming, alive with your own handiwork. Somewhere above, the entrance you’d used was gone. You’d mapped that truth too.

Ahead, the corridor split into three identical arches, their keystones carved with a single word repeated in a dead tongue: choose.

The Assistant’s lantern guttered. “It’s waiting for you to decide.”

What happens next is up to you.
