The Fabricated Life

Mature

Your whole world is a lie—and the truth waits in the dungeon beneath your cellar.

You're a tavern keeper in a quiet village, content with your ale, your regulars, and the simple rhythm of days. But when a dying stranger collapses at your bar and whispers that everything you remember is a scripted fabrication, your cozy life shatters. The only path to the real you lies through the sealed dungeon beneath your cellar—a maze of shifting halls and living shadows that pulses with the architect's watchful presence. As you descend, you'll uncover who you truly are, but every step deeper may be a step the architect planned for you.

The story begins

The courier’s body hit your cellar floor with a sound that didn’t belong to your world—a wet, final crack. You were already kneeling, your hands pressing against the blood-soaked wool of his tunic, the familiar weight of a tankard still in your other hand. You’d been drawing the ale when he stumbled through the tavern door, his eyes wild, his breath ragged. Now he lay in your arms, his lips moving, forming words that made no sense.

“The… core,” he wheezed. “You built this… you built all of it. The stones… they shift because you… remember.”

You stared at him, the tankard slipping from your fingers. It clattered against the flagstones, a sound that echoed too long, too far, like the cellar stretched further than it should. The courier’s hand shot up, gripping your wrist with surprising strength. His eyes, glassy and dying, locked onto yours.

“You don’t remember… do you? You made the world to forget… but the dungeon… it’s your own… your own mind, you fool.”

His grip went slack. The heartbeat beneath the floor—the one you’d always dismissed as the water pump—throbbed once, twice, and then stopped. For a terrible, silent moment, the world held its breath.

Then the cellar door creaked open behind you. Maren’s voice, sharp and low: “He’s dead, isn’t he? And now you know.”

What happens next is up to you.
