The Gilded Easel

Mature

You wake to a life you never chose—and the man who painted it wants you to stay.

You're a painter whose world shatters when you discover your apartment, your friends, and your gallery success are all part of an elaborate stage built by a reclusive billionaire patron. He claims he only wanted to nurture your art, but hidden cameras and missing childhood memories reveal a puppet master who will destroy his creation if you refuse to stay. As you unravel the layers of his deception, you must decide: escape the gilded cage, or unmask the man who's been pulling your strings—and risk losing your heart to a monster.

The story begins

The shard of sunlight caught the lens just as you lifted the vase to dust the shelf—a tiny, telltale glint where no glint should be. You set the porcelain down slowly, your fingers trembling against the cold glaze, and leaned in. There it was: a camera no bigger than a fingernail, nestled among the dried lavender stems, its red light blinking in quiet, patient rhythm.

Your breath caught. You turned, scanning the room with new eyes. The brass clock on the mantel—there, a pinprick of glass. The light fixture above the dining table—another. Your studio doorframe, where the shadow pooled just wrong—a fourth.

Your phone sat on the counter, silent and dark. You grabbed it, thumb swiping to your contacts. Empty. Your gallery's number, your best friend Mara's, the framer who knew your style—all gone. The screen stared back, a blank, polished void.

Your heart hammered as you dialed the gallery from memory. The line rang. A stranger's voice answered: "I'm sorry, we've never had an artist by that name."

The floor seemed to tilt. Outside, the city hummed, indifferent. Inside, every object in your carefully curated life had become a witness.

What happens next is up to you.
