The Gilded Prison
You wake each morning in a perfect villa, but the only way out is down.
You wake each morning in a perfect villa, tended by silent servants, your every memory and scar a crafted illusion. The only crack in the facade is a cellar door that appears in your dreams, and the dungeon below holds the truth of who you were before the illusion began. Escape the gilded cage, uncover the architect's design, and decide if the reality you find is worth the freedom it costs. A tale of survival and self-discovery where nothing is as it seems.
The story begins
The morning light hit your eyelids like a warm lie. You sat up in bed, the silk sheets pooling around your waist, and the room swam into focus—whitewashed walls, gauzy curtains breathing in the sea breeze, a vase of sunflowers on the nightstand that hadn't been there yesterday.
Or had it?
You pressed your palms into your eyes, trying to catch the tail of a dream already dissolving. There was something about a staircase. Stone. Cold. A door at the bottom that you knew—you knew—you'd opened before.
The villa hummed with its usual perfection. Birdsong. The distant chime of a fountain. Everything exactly as it should be, which was precisely what made your skin prickle.
You swung your legs over the edge of the bed and stood. The floor was warm. Too warm, almost, for the morning chill that had raised goosebumps along your arms. You crossed to the window and looked out at the endless garden—hedges trimmed into perfect spirals, roses in impossible bloom, a path that curved and vanished into a wall of green.
Your reflection stared back at you from the glass. Same face. Same eyes. The face of a stranger you'd been waking up with for longer than you could remember.
That was when you saw it. A crack in the corner of the window frame, fine as a spider's thread, and through it, the faintest draft of something cold. Something wrong.
A voice, soft and familiar, drifted from the doorway: "You feel it too, don't you? The pull."
You turned. A woman stood there—Elara, her name surfacing like a bubble in your mind—dressed in white, watching you with eyes that knew far too much.
"Every day," she said, "you find the crack. And every day, you pretend you didn't."
