The Glacier's Witness

Mature

You chart the forbidden mountain, but the living glacier beneath it charts you.

As a disgraced cartographer, you've been hired to verify a secret treaty carved into the ice of a mountain no one is supposed to climb. When you arrive, you find the negotiators slaughtered and the map's true purpose revealed: the glacier is not stone and snow but a living, ancient mind, and its heart lies below. Now the mountain knows you see it, and it will do anything to keep its secret buried. With the treaty a lie and the ice closing in, you must decide: expose the glacier's truth and doom the world, or become its next silent witness.

The story begins

The wind screamed over the ridge, a sound like a blade drawn across stone, and you pressed your shoulder against the ice-sheathed rock to keep from being lifted off your feet. The camp was below you, a scatter of blackened tents and gear half-buried in the drifts, and the bodies were not where the radio had said they would be.

They had moved.

You counted them from the slope—seven, eight, nine, all in the same strange pose: arms raised, mouths open, frozen mid-prayer or mid-scream. One of them, the expedition's botanist, had her fingers pressed against the ice as if listening. As if begging.

The snow beneath your boots gave a long, slow crack. Not the sound of pressure. The sound of something turning over in its sleep.

You slid down the embankment, boots crunching through the crust, and landed beside the camp's central tent. The flap hung open. Inside, the table was set for a meal that never happened, plates rimed with frost, and on the map table, a single piece of paper pinned by a knife.

The treaty.

It was blank.

Behind you, the glacier groaned—a sound that came from the ground itself, not above it—and you felt the vibration travel up through your bones like a question.

What happens next is up to you.
