The Inheritance of Emptiness

Mature

You inherit your grandmother's penthouse, but the vault holds a man—a billionaire who claims she saved him, while the chains tell a darker story.

When your reclusive grandmother dies, you inherit her towering penthouse—a gilded cage filled with secrets. Behind a hidden vault door, you find not gold, but a man: a billionaire who says he was her prisoner, yet speaks of her with reverence. He claims she was his savior; the chains around his wrists suggest otherwise. Now you must decide: is he a victim to free, a liar to expose, or something far more dangerous? The forbidden love that bound them is now a trap waiting to close around you.

The story begins

The brass key turned with a sound like a verdict. Marcus stood behind you in the penthouse's grand foyer, his breath a quiet steam in the cold air, and watched as you pressed the bookshelf's hidden latch. The panel slid aside with a whisper of old machinery, revealing a corridor that smelled of dust and disinfectant.

"Your grandmother was a peculiar woman," Marcus said, his voice flat. "She kept her most valuable possessions close."

You stepped inside. The vault was small, almost monastic—a narrow bed with sheets folded military-tight, a shelf of leather-bound books, a bank of monitors showing feeds of empty rooms. And there, seated in a chair that faced the door as if he'd been waiting for years, was a man.

He was older than you expected, his face drawn but handsome, his dark hair threaded with silver. His wrists were bare—no chains, no cuffs. He wore a simple gray sweater, and his eyes, when they found yours, held a tired, careful warmth.

"You must be her granddaughter," Adrian Cross said. "She spoke of you. Often."

Marcus made a sound like clearing his throat. "Mr. Cross has been a guest of the estate for eleven years."

Adrian smiled, and it didn't quite reach his eyes. "Guest. That's one word for it."

What happens next is up to you.
