The Living Depths
You are the world's greatest mapmaker, and the labyrinth you're paid to chart is the only clue to your freedom.
As the most celebrated dungeon-cartographer of your age, you've mapped wonders and horrors alike—but the Obsidian Labyrinth is unlike anything you've ever faced. This living dungeon rearranges its halls with every heartbeat, and when your patron is murdered, the crown blames you. To clear your name and uncover a conspiracy that reaches the throne, you must navigate the very maze you were paid to chart, using your expertise to survive its shifting traps and the lies that bind the kingdom. Every drawing you make is a step toward the truth, but the labyrinth has its own agenda—and it's been waiting for someone who can truly see it.
The story begins
The crossbow bolt took Lord Ashford in the back of the thigh, punching through wool and leather with a sound like a fist through wet bread. He went down hard against the obsidian steps, his map case clattering away from him, skittering down two steps before coming to rest against your boot.
"Run, you fool!" he gasped, blood already pooling black on the black stone.
You didn't run. You dropped to your knees beside him, hands finding the wound, pressure, pressure—your palms slick with his warmth. "Hold on. Hold on, we can—"
The royal guard crested the ridge above, armor glinting in the pale light of the twin moons. A captain's voice cut through the wind: "By order of the king, seize the cartographer! For the murder of Lord Ashford!"
Murder. The word hung there, absurd, monstrous. Ashford's fingers closed around your wrist with surprising strength. "The labyrinth," he rasped. "It knows. It remembers. Find the heart, and—"
His eyes went wide, fixed on something behind you. You turned to see Kaelen Voss standing at the mouth of the labyrinth, a crossbow still smoking in his hands, a smile curving his lips.
"Always so precise with your maps," he called down. "But you never could read a room."
Behind you, the obsidian walls groaned—and began to shift.
