The Vaultmaker's Last Client

Mature

You built the traps that guard a king's tomb — now the dungeon has been waiting for you to return.

You are the world's finest trapwright, retired and living quietly with your secrets. But when a rival expedition hires you to map the dungeon of the dead king Aldric, you know it's the last job you'll ever take. The catch: every trap you ever designed is here, and the dungeon has been growing, learning, waiting for you. As you descend, you realize the architecture is yours — but the design is not. The impossible choice: trust your own legacy, or the stranger who claims to know the way out.

The story begins

The stone door ground shut behind you with a sound like a rib cage closing. Dust sifted from the ceiling, and somewhere above, a pressure plate clicked—then another, then a third, a chain of them rippling away into the dark like a wave of snapping teeth. You froze, fingers still pressed to the sigil you'd just traced, the one that had opened the door. Or maybe the one that had sealed it.

The corridor ahead was wrong. You'd memorized every blueprint, every sketch, every half-forgotten schematic you'd ever drawn for this place. This wasn't one of yours. The walls were angled too sharply, the stone veined with something that pulsed faintly, like a sleeping heart. The air tasted of copper and burnt gears.

Then you heard it—a footstep. Behind you. Close enough that you could smell the oil and sweat of a living body, the faint tang of gunpowder. A voice, low and female, with a smile in it you didn't trust.

"Don't move, trapwright. You've got something of mine."

You turned, slowly, and found Maren Voss leaning against the doorframe, a crossbow in her gloved hand, her grin sharp as a sprung blade.

What happens next is up to you.
