The Wailing Gate

Mature

You are the last locksmith, and the door to the treasure is a living hunger.

A starving village, a cursed gate, and a daughter's life on the line. You are the last locksmith trained to open the Wailing Gate, the only passage to a fabled treasure hoard that could save your home. But the dungeon beyond is a living maw that devours all who enter, and the village council has given you an impossible choice: descend and unlock the treasure, or lose your daughter to a fate worse than death. With your child's life hanging in the balance, you must brave a labyrinth of living stone, where every lock you pick feeds the door's insatiable appetite, and the only way out is through the heart of the beast.

The story begins

The wind carried the gate’s whisper before you even touched it—a low, coiling sound like rust through dead leaves, threading between the screams carved into the black iron. Your fingers, calloused from a hundred locks, traced the cold bone hinge. Behind you, Mira’s breath came in short, frightened bursts, and you didn’t need to turn to see the council’s torches ringed at the edge of the clearing, Eldra’s silhouette sharp as a blade against the flame.

“Father,” Mira whispered, and the gate’s whisper twisted around her voice, almost mimicking it. Stay. Or she stays.

Your tools hung heavy at your belt—the brass picks, the silver tension wrench, the key that had never found its lock. A century of secrets pressed against your palms. Eldra’s ultimatum burned in your throat like ash.

“You come back,” Mira said, not a question. A demand.

The gate groaned, a sound like a ribcage cracking open. Somewhere beyond the iron, something waited, patient and hungry.

What happens next is up to you.
