The Cartographer's Folly

You map the ruins, but some doors should never be opened.

As the world's finest ruin-cartographer, you're hired to chart the uncharted labyrinth beneath a desert city. But when your employer reveals a plan to unleash an ancient evil, you find yourself torn between your duty and your heart. With a rival explorer and a hidden lover from your past by your side, every step deeper forces you to choose who—and what—you're willing to sacrifice.

The story begins

The chisel bit into the sandstone, and the faint scrape of it was the only sound in the chamber. Dust motes swirled in the lamplight, dancing over the carved glyphs you'd spent the last three hours deciphering. Your back ached, your fingers were raw, and the air tasted of copper and old stone. You were close—closer than any living cartographer had ever been.

"Find something interesting, or just making art?"

You didn't look up. Kestrel's voice carried that familiar edge, part amusement, part contempt. He leaned against the archway, arms crossed, a shadow in the flickering light. "I found your ego, but I'm afraid it's not mapped."

"Funny." He pushed off the wall, stepping closer, his boots echoing. "Malachai's getting impatient. He didn't pay you to admire the wall."

"He's paying me to map it." You traced a finger over a symbol—three interlocking circles, worn smooth by centuries. Your stomach tightened. You'd seen that mark before, in a text so old it crumbled at a touch. "And I'm starting to think he's not paying me enough."

Kestrel went still. "What does that mean?"

The lamp guttered. Somewhere above, in the labyrinth's unseen depths, a door slammed.

What happens next is up to you.
