The Painted Firmament
You've lived your whole life in a village with painted stars overhead—and now the painter is watching you.
You've always known your village's clockwork routine: same faces, same fires, same whispered prayers to a sky that never changes. But when you notice the stars are not stars but brushstrokes, and the blacksmith—a stranger—knows your name, the cracks in your world spread faster than you can trace. Beneath the village lies a hidden mechanism, and the only way out is through a storm of burning glass that could kill you or free you. To find the real world, you must break every rule you've ever known, but each step makes the dome shatter further—and the one who built it is watching your every move.
The story begins
The bell above the forge door hadn't stopped ringing when you noticed it—the way Elias's jaw sat wrong in his face. He'd been hammering horseshoes for three years in this village, and you'd watched him shape iron a hundred times. But the man before you now had a scar on his thumb you'd never seen, a scar that looked fresh, pink, and too neat to be an accident.
"Your order's ready," he said, and his voice was the same—low, warm, with that slight rasp from years of smoke. But his eyes lingered on you a beat too long, like he was cataloging your face for the first time.
You took the horseshoe. It was cold. Forged iron doesn't go cold that fast.
"You're not Elias," you said, the words leaving your mouth before your mind caught up.
The forge fire popped. Outside, the painted sky flickered—a glitch in the sunrise sequence that no one else seemed to notice. Through the glass dome above, the storm howled, a dull roar of grinding glass shards against the barrier.
Elias—or whoever he was—set down his hammer. "No," he said quietly. "I'm not."
