The Homecoming Debt

You return to a desert village that sold your promise—and the water beneath it.

Ten years after fleeing your desert home, you return to find the oasis spring—the one you swore to guard for your dying mother—has been sold to a ruthless water baron. The only way to reclaim it is to brave the ruins beneath the dunes, where the guardian of the spring still waits, harboring a grudge against your family. Can you outwit the baron and face the guardian's judgment, or will the debt of your past consume you? A story of survival, sand, and shattered loyalties in a harsh desert wasteland.

The story begins

The sun was a raw wound in the sky when the old truck coughed its last breath at the village edge. You killed the engine and sat there, hands on the wheel, watching the dust settle over a place you'd sworn you'd never see again. The oasis was still there—but smaller. Meaner. A ring of rusted pumps and hoses girdled its shrunken shore like a cage, and beyond it, the dunes had swallowed another row of crumbling rooftops since you'd been gone.

You stepped out. The heat hit like a fist. Somewhere down by the water, a woman's voice cracked out a laugh, and you recognized it before you saw her—Mara, threading a hose to a tank, her hair cropped short now, her arms scarred with work. She looked up. Her smile died.

"You came back," she said, and the words held no warmth.

"I heard what Voss did."

"He didn't do anything." She wiped her brow, leaving a streak of grime. "He bought it. Fair coin, fair papers. The village sold its own throat."

Your mother's promise—the one you'd fled from—sat in your chest like a stone. The well behind Mara gurgled, thin and wrong.

What happens next is up to you.
