The Last Purifier
You can cleanse the poisoned waters, but each drop costs a memory—how much of yourself are you willing to lose?
In a world ravaged by nuclear fallout, you are the last Purifier, a rare soul with the power to render toxic water drinkable. A desperate clan besieged by mutants offers you a fortune for a single ritual, but the purification demands a sacrifice: a piece of your memory for every drop you cleanse. As you trade your past for their future, you must decide what—and who—is worth forgetting. A gripping tale of survival and sacrifice in a gritty wasteland, where every memory is currency and the ultimate price is yourself.
The story begins
The gate of the Last Well settlement groaned shut behind you, its iron teeth scraping against a century of rust. The air tasted of ash and copper—the metallic tang of blood-soaked earth that had become the scent of home. Before you, a hundred gaunt faces turned toward you in the dying light, their eyes holding the hollow desperation of people who had already begun to count their dead.
A child coughed, a dry, wracking sound that echoed off the crumbling walls. Her mother clutched her closer, knuckles white against the girl's thin shoulders.
You felt the weight of your gift pressing against your skull—that familiar hum of borrowed power, the ache of memory waiting to be spent.
"Purifier." The voice came from above, rough as gravel. Elder Marrow stood on a platform of welded scrap, his long coat whipping in the wind. "You came. I wasn't certain you would."
Behind him, a young scout with sharp eyes and a shorter temper—Silt, you'd heard—watched you with an intensity that suggested she saw more than she let on.
"You promised payment," you said. "I honor my word. Does yours still hold?"
Marrow smiled, and it didn't reach his eyes. "The water is nearly gone. The mutants grow bolder by the hour. You'll have your fortune, Purifier—if you can save us before the Well runs dry."
