The Cartographer's Last Chart

You map the Sighing Wastes, but the map is mapping you.

You're the finest mapmaker alive, hired to chart the Sighing Wastes and find a noble's lost tomb. But the wastes aren't a place—they're a vast, living creature, and your maps are its memory. Every line you draw rewrites your past, and soon you're becoming a permanent inhabitant of its body. You must find the tomb and escape before you forget who you are.

The story begins

The wind carried the sound of a woman weeping, and you looked up from your instruments to find the dunes had shifted while you worked. The Sighing Wastes had moved your camp three hundred yards southeast without a whisper of warning. You pressed your palm flat against the ground, felt the slow, rhythmic expansion beneath the sand—the creature's breath, warm and patient.

The Noble's Heir stood at the edge of the ridge, silhouetted against the bruised orange sky, her fine coat whipping in the sighing air. "You're drawing the wrong thing," she called down. "The tomb isn't where your lines say."

You didn't argue. You'd learned that much in the three days since she'd hired you—arguing with her was like arguing with the desert. You rolled your parchment, noticing the ink had begun to shimmer with a faint, alien iridescence. The old cartographer's voice rose from somewhere inside your skull, thin as a thread of smoke.

Don't ink what you see. Ink what the land wants you to see. That's the only way out.

You shook your head, trying to dislodge the whisper. But beneath your fingertips, the ground breathed again, and you could swear it was laughing.

What happens next is up to you.
