The Cartographer's Pawn

Mature

You chart the unknown, but this expedition charts you as a bargaining chip.

As a master mapmaker, you're hired by a rival explorer to chart treacherous, unmapped lands. But when you reach the border, you discover you're not the cartographer—you're the cargo, traded to a hostile tribe for safe passage. To survive, you must pass their trials and prove your worth, while your patron watches, ready to sell you to a worse fate if you fail.

The story begins

The rope bit into your wrists, sun-baked and coarse, as the tribe's warriors marched you into the circle of standing stones. Your patron, Marlowe, stood at the edge of the clearing with his arms crossed, a thin smile playing at the corner of his mouth—the smile of a man who had just spent his most valuable asset and expected a return.

"The mapmaker," the Elder said, her voice like stone grinding against stone. She studied you from beneath a crown of feathers and bone, her eyes missing nothing. "You read the land. You say you can find a way through the mountains."

You tasted dust and copper—your lip split where a warrior's fist had found it during the capture. The sun pressed down like a hand on the back of your neck.

"We will see if your eyes are worth keeping in your skull."

Behind her, a warrior stepped forward. Kael, younger than the others, his gaze not hostile but measuring. He studied you the way you'd studied uncharted ridgelines—looking for the hidden path.

Marlowe cleared his throat. "She's the best. I wouldn't have brought her otherwise."

The Elder didn't look at him. "You brought her to be sold."

What happens next is up to you.
