The Cursed Ledger
MatureYour name is in the ledger, and the debt comes due at midnight.
You inherit a debt-collector's ledger that binds names to lives, a book that can ruin or save anyone whose name is written in it. But the first entry is your own, and the debt comes due at midnight. To survive, you must hunt down the one name that could cancel it all, even if that name belongs to your only ally. A gritty, survival-driven hunt through a world of hidden debts and darker bargains.
The story begins
The ledger sat on your bedside table, warm as a body that had just been sleeping there. You’d only meant to sort through your great-aunt’s estate, but the leather cover pulsed under your fingertips—a heartbeat too slow, too steady to be your own.
You opened it. Your name, in ink that gleamed like wet coal, was the first entry. Due: midnight. The clock on your nightstand read 11:47.
Thirteen minutes.
Your apartment smelled of rain and copper. Through the window, the city’s spires cut the fog like broken teeth. Something scraped against the fire escape—a boot, deliberate, not a cat. You knew, with a certainty that sat cold in your stomach, that the ledger had already told someone you were here.
The torn page. The one name that could cancel yours. It was out there, in the wet dark, and every debt-collector in the city would be hunting it by dawn—or by midnight, if they were faster.
The knob rattled. The lock held, for now.
