The Debtor's Atlas

Mature

You are a living map, and the man who owns your debt knows every path to your heart.

Bound by your father's bargain, you serve a ruthless treasure-hunting gang as a human compass, sensing ancient gold buried beneath the earth. The gang's leader is your former lover, a man who knows your every secret and uses them to keep you in line. Now the gang has found the trail to a vault that could set you free—or consume your humanity forever. But if you refuse to lead them, the debt collector will take your family's home, and the only person who can decide which is worse is the enemy who once held your heart.

The story begins

The sun hammered the canyon floor, baking the dust until it shimmered like a fever dream. You knelt in the shadow of a fallen obelisk, your palms flat against the cracked earth, feeling the pulse of something vast and molten beneath the stone. Gold. Tons of it, coiled like a sleeping serpent in the dark.

"Anything?" Kael's voice came from behind you, low and edged with impatience. He didn't ask if you were alright. He never did.

You opened your eyes, the world swimming back into focus—the bleached bones of old ruins, the heat-haze distorting the distance, Mara watching you from the ridge with her hand resting on the hilt of her knife.

"It's here," you said, the words scraping out of a throat gone dry. "Under the old aqueduct. But there's something else."

Kael stepped closer, close enough that you caught the smell of leather and sweat and something sharper—greed, maybe. His shadow swallowed yours. "Something else?"

You looked up at him, and for a moment, the weight of your father's debt pressed down on your spine like a physical thing. "A price. The stories say the vault takes what you won't give freely."

A slow smile spread across Kael's face, and it didn't reach his eyes. "Good thing I don't believe in stories."

What happens next is up to you.
