The False Meridian
MatureYou chart a cursed labyrinth beneath a dying sea, and the walls sing your name.
You are a spy, a thief of maps, posing as a royal navigator on an expedition to map a labyrinth that breathes beneath a dying sea. But a fellow crew member whispers your real name, and the labyrinth's walls echo lullabies from your childhood. If your cover shatters, the captain's blade will find your spine; if it holds, you'll have to lead them to the treasure you were sent to steal for yourself. The deepest currents run with secrets—uncover them before they drag you under.
The story begins
The brine stung the fresh cut on your palm as you braced against the passage wall, the Meridian's Ghost creaking somewhere above the waterline. The expedition had been in the labyrinth for three hours, and already two of Rook's men had vanished into a side channel that shifted while they watched. You'd marked the walls with chalk, but the chalk was gone now, scraped clean by something that moved in the dark.
Sable appeared at your elbow like a ripple in the gloom, their smile too knowing in the pulse of the runes.
"You're holding your compass wrong," they said, voice low. "A real royal navigator would know the needle spins true here. Yours is pointing at me."
The walls began to hum. Your mother's lullaby, the one she sang when the tide took the fishing boats and never brought them back, rose from the stone like breath.
Sable's eyes widened. "I knew it. You're the child from the drowned village. The one the labyrinth kept."
The song swelled, and somewhere above, Captain Rook shouted your false name.
