The False Oracle

You can't read the land, but the land has started reading you.

You're a failed cartographer in a living virtual world, scraping by on forged maps and bad luck. When a desperate treasure-hunter mistakes you for the legendary Oracle of Paths, you lean into the lie to escape a debt you can't pay. Now the world's most ruthless seekers follow your every guess—and the terrain itself is beginning to believe you, reshaping itself to match your lies. But when your false prophecies start coming true, you must decide: keep the mask and risk becoming the monster they worship, or reveal the truth and lose everything you've built.

The story begins

The dust of Verge still clung to your coat when the crowd found you. They spilled from the market stalls like floodwater, their faces lit with a hunger you'd seen a hundred times—the look of people who've decided to believe in something.

"She's the one," a woman hissed. "The Oracle of Paths."

You opened your mouth to correct her, but the words died on your tongue. Kestrel stood at the edge of the crowd, one eyebrow raised, a half-smile playing at her lips. She'd been watching you for three days. She knew you were a failed cartographer with a debt that could swallow a kingdom.

But the crowd didn't know that. They only knew your last three guesses had led them to water, to shelter, to a cache of old-world steel.

The Labyrinth shivered. Somewhere beyond the town's stable node, the ground groaned—a sound like stone grinding against stone.

"What do you see?" the woman pressed, her fingers closing around your sleeve.

Kestrel's smile widened.

What happens next is up to you.
