The Simulacrum's Choice

Mature

You wake to discover your life is a lie—and the only way out is to betray the one person who's real.

You've always felt something was off about your idyllic town, but you dismissed it as paranoia. Then you found the glitch—a crack in the sky, a repeated conversation, a memory that doesn't belong. Now your handler, the only person who's ever told you the truth, reveals the horrifying reality: your entire life is a simulation designed to keep you docile. The only escape is to compete in a brutal reality show where you must betray your handler on live broadcast to win your freedom. But if you refuse, you'll be reset, losing everything you've ever known. Choose: play the game and destroy the only real connection you have, or cling to your false life and let them erase you.

The story begins

The soft chime of the cottage door was almost swallowed by the rain, a steady percussion against the thatched roof. You stood in the doorway, dripping onto the polished oak floor, the scent of woodsmoke and rain filling your lungs. Across the room, Elara looked up from the fire, her fingers stilling on the lute strings. The amber light caught the sharp line of her jaw, the wary set of her shoulders.

"You're late," she said, her voice low, carrying the weight of a shared secret. "The Director's eyes are everywhere tonight."

You crossed the room, the floorboards groaning beneath your boots. "Then let him watch." You reached for her hand, your fingers brushing the calluses she'd earned from years of playing for unseen audiences. "The simulation glitched again. The orchard — it's not right. The trees are whispering in a language I almost understand."

Elara's grip tightened. "You shouldn't have gone there. That's where they bury the memories they don't want us to find."

What happens next is up to you.
