The Ghost Cartographer

You are a lie—now follow the map that knows your truth.

You live a scholar's quiet life, but every memory is a forgery, every document a planted seed. When a cryptic map arrives, its ghostly guardian compels you into the wilderness toward a truth that unravels your very being. Yet the guardian is also your enemy, and the path is fraught with tests that threaten to unmake you. Will you trust the one who knows you're a fabrication—or destroy the only key to your real past?

The story begins

The knock came at the hour when lamplight pools yellow on ink-stained desks and the city holds its breath. You looked up from the half-finished survey of the Thornwood—a commission for a merchant who'd never pay on time—and found your hand already reaching for the door before your mind caught up. That was the first wrongness: you hadn't decided to move.

The stranger on the threshold wore a coat that shimmered like oil on water. They said nothing, only pressed a rolled vellum tube into your palms, their fingers cold even through the paper. By the time you blinked, the street was empty, fog curling where they'd stood.

You meant to set it aside. You meant to finish the Thornwood, seal it, sleep. But the tube hummed—a faint, resonant thrum you felt in your teeth—and when your thumb brushed the seal, the wax crumbled like ash.

The map unfurled of its own accord. Rivers moved. Mountains shifted. A single red line traced from your doorstep to a place marked The Hollow Cartographer, a name you'd never heard, in handwriting you recognized as your own.

The ink glowed. The room went cold. And a voice, dry as old parchment, spoke from the center of the map:

"Well. You finally touched it. Now we're both in trouble."

What happens next is up to you.
