The Living Ledger

Your compass maps the truth—but the maze wants you to lie.

You are a cartographer's collateral, bound to a living maze that shifts with every falsehood you tell. When your patron's rival steals the second compass, you must forge an uneasy alliance to escape—but the maze's truths are dangerous, and the only way out may be to redraw the map of everything you thought you knew. A story of survival, betrayal, and impossible choices in a world where maps lie and truth is the deadliest weapon.

The story begins

The compass in your palm spins wild, its needle a liar's needle, and you know the walls have moved again before you hear the scrape of stone on stone. The antechamber you woke in is gone, replaced by a corridor of black basalt, its seams weeping a faint, mineral light. Your patron's voice, when it comes, is oil over gravel, echoing from everywhere and nowhere.

"Truth, cartographer. Find it, or the maze will keep you."

You feel the price of that lie before you've even told one—a tremor in your sternum, a subtle settling of the floor beneath your boots. The corridor shudders.

A sound behind you. A boot against loose stone.

The Rival steps from a carved alcove you'd have sworn was solid a moment ago. She's younger than her reputation, sharp-boned, with ink-stained fingers wrapped around a compass that glows a soft, accusatory gold. She looks at you the way a hawk looks at a rabbit.

"You're the Patron's new collateral." Not a question. "He collects cartographers the way other men collect horses. Works them to death, then wonders why they bolt."

The walls groan. A seam splits the floor between you, widening by inches.

What happens next is up to you.
