The Living Island
Every step you chart is a stone in a beast's living hide—map your escape before it sinks.
You are a master surveyor, hired to chart an uncharted island for a wealthy patron. But when you arrive, you find the island is a colossal creature, its terrain shifting with every heartbeat. To survive, you must map a path across its skin while it slowly submerges beneath the waves. A rival cartographer, a secret in your past, and a creature that seems to know you—will you escape, or become part of its legend?
The story begins
The deck pitched beneath your boots—not a wave, but something deeper, a slow, muscular swell that had no business in open water. You gripped the rail, salt stinging your eyes, and watched the island rise against the bruised dawn. It shouldn't exist. Not here, not shaped like that—a sprawl of green and stone that seemed to breathe, its ridgelines curving like ribs under skin.
Behind you, the Patron's voice cut through the wind. "Impressive, isn't she? They said the charts were wrong. They said it was all legend."
You didn't turn. Your gaze traced the coastline, the impossible geometry of it—a valley that folded into a mountain that folded into a cliff, all of it wrong, all of it alive. "The charts aren't wrong," you said, low. "They're incomplete."
The Rival Cartographer snorted from the shadow of the mast, ink-stained fingers drumming against a rolled map. "Incomplete. That's one word for it. Another is unmappable."
You felt the weight of their stare, the challenge in it. This was your redemption. Your name on the final survey. And every instinct you had was screaming that this island was not what it appeared to be.
The Native Guide stepped forward, silent as a shadow, and placed a weathered hand on the rail. "You feel it?" they murmured. "The ground is not ground. It is skin."
