The story begins
The dawn air tasted of iron and wet stone as you cinched the leather strap of your surveyor's pack, your fingers moving with the practiced economy of a man who had mapped a thousand miles of contested ground. Behind you, in the half-ruined garrison house, Kael coughed—a wet, rattling sound that had become the rhythm of your nights.
You didn't turn around. You couldn't.
The map case at your hip held the last survey you'd completed, the ink still fresh on the borderlands west of the Thornveil Pass. But it wasn't the map you needed that mattered now. It was the one you'd drawn yourself, in secret, on a scrap of oiled hide: the route through the Forbidden Boundary, marked with your own careful hand, annotated with the symbols no imperial cartographer had ever used.
Beyond the boundary, the flower grew. The Warden's oath would bite the moment your boot crossed the line.
Kael's voice came from the doorway, rough with sleep and fever. "You're going to get yourself killed."
You looked back at him—his sharp cheekbones, the grey pallor under his skin, the stubborn set of his jaw that had never once admitted fear.
"Then I'll be in good company," you said.
