The Impostor's Passage

You're a fugitive wearing a lost explorer's name, and the only way to survive is to find the city that unmade her.

You've been running from a past that could kill you, and now you've stumbled into the identity of a vanished explorer whose expedition disappeared decades ago. A powerful patron offers you a fortune to finish her quest: find the lost city she was seeking. But the closer you get, the more the jungle recognizes you as its missing conqueror—and the more the real explorer's story unravels. If you refuse, you're dead. If you succeed, the truth will surface and expose the fraud you are. The only way out is through, into a city that may decide you're the real thing—or bury you with the lies.

The story begins

The machete bit into the vine with a wet, sucking sound, and you wrenched it free before the blade could catch. Sweat stung the fresh cut on your forearm—a gift from a thorned branch three hours ago—and you ignored it the way you'd learned to ignore everything else that ached.

Behind you, the Patron's boots squelched in the mud. He didn't speak, but you felt his gaze like a hand on your spine. The Navigator stood ahead, still as a heron, his scarred face tilted toward the canopy where something large moved with a sound like dragging chains.

"This isn't the trail," he said. Not accusing. Not yet.

You wiped your brow with the back of your hand, tasting salt and copper. "Elara took a different route. I remember."

The lie slid out smooth as oil. You'd rehearsed it a hundred times in the dark of a cargo hold, but here, under the green gloom and the weight of a jungle that had swallowed a dozen expeditions, it felt thin as paper.

The Navigator's eyes narrowed. "She never came this way."

The canopy shuddered. Something screamed—animal, not human—and the Patron's hand drifted toward his holster.

"Keep moving," you said, and prayed your voice didn't shake.

What happens next is up to you.
