The Last Ember Walker
Walk the molten veins of the world, and burn away your soul to save the sky.
You are the final fire-tender, the only one who can walk the world's molten veins and forge the anchors that hold the sky aloft. When the Celestial Cartel kidnaps your young apprentice—the sole inheritor of your gift—they demand you relight their sunken forges first. Every step in the fire consumes a fragment of your soul, but refusing means the sky will crush every city within a week. A desperate choice between your own humanity and the fate of the world.
The story begins
The Cartel's boots rang on the black stone of the docking pier, and you didn't turn from the railing. Below, the dead sea churned with ash-flecked foam, a grim mirror of the cracked sky overhead. The Warden's voice carried over the wind, smooth as worn glass.
"Ember Walker. You have three days."
You let the silence stretch, watching a fissure spider across the dome above — thin, silver, wrong. You'd seen that wound before, in the fall of the last sky. It had taken everything then. Your name. Your face. The sound of your own mother's laughter. All of it burned away in the forges.
"You have my apprentice," you said, your voice a rasp that surprised even you. "That's not a negotiation."
The Warden stepped beside you, close enough that you caught the oil-and-iron smell of him. He held out a sealed brass canister, its surface etched with the old flame-runes. "Relight the forges. Each one buys her breath. Each one buys you time."
You looked at his hand. At the canister. At the map burned into the inside of your skull — the three sunken forges, waiting beneath the black water like patient teeth.
"And if I refuse?"
The Warden smiled. It didn't touch his eyes.
"Then Lyra burns. But slowly. And you'll watch from the shore."
The wind picked up, carrying the first whisper of something older than the Cartel, something that knew your name.
