The Living Map's Bargain

Chart the maze that charts you back—before your patron's key becomes your cage.

You are the world's finest cartographer, lured by a patron's gold to map the legendary Maze of Mirrors. But this maze is no ruin—it's a living, sentient trap that learns your every weakness and erases your exits. And your patron doesn't want a map; she wants the maze's heart to power a weapon that will conquer the world. To escape with your life—and your soul—you'll have to out-draw the labyrinth itself, and decide if the map you make is a tool for conquest or the key to freedom.

The story begins

The quill scratched against the vellum with a sound like a dying insect. Ink, black as oil, bled into the map’s edge and spread — a stain that was wrong, because you hadn’t spilled anything. The candle guttered. The map of the Maze’s outer hall shimmered, and the ink began to crawl.

You shoved back from the desk, heart slamming. The map was a lie now. The corridor you’d charted an hour ago had twisted itself into a knot, the lines writhing like worms in a jar. Somewhere beyond the paper, stone groaned — a deep, grinding sound that vibrated up through the floorboards of the inn.

Seraphine Vex’s voice came from the doorway, silk over steel. “Trouble, my dear cartographer?”

You didn’t look at her. You were watching the map’s ink pool into a single, perfect spiral — a spiral that seemed to be looking back at you.

“It knows,” you said. “Every line I draw, it learns.”

A low chuckle, not from Vex. From the mirror on the far wall. Your own reflection was smiling, and it wasn’t your smile.

What happens next is up to you.
