The Memory Cartographer
You map the impossible house, but every line you draw uncovers the truth you buried.
You are the most renowned cartographer of the age, hired by a reclusive collector to chart the ever-shifting interior of a haunted house. But the moment you step inside, you realize the walls are your childhood home, and the corridors twist through your buried memories. As you trace the impossible architecture, you uncover the dark secrets of your past—and the collector's fortune may depend on keeping them hidden. Can you map your own soul before the house unmakes you?
The story begins
The brass knocker was still cold against your knuckles when the door swung inward, and the smell hit you—yeast, woodsmoke, and the ghost of your mother's lavender sachets. Your hand froze mid-air.
The Collector stood in the threshold, a tall silhouette against a hall that shouldn't exist. Behind him, the foyer stretched into a kitchen with a scarred oak table, a pot bubbling on the stove. Your childhood kitchen. The one that burned down when you were nine.
"Ah," he said, voice like dry paper. "You recognize it. Good. That will save time."
Your fingers tightened on the leather case holding your instruments. The map was supposed to be in the library. A simple commission. The house had other plans.
"Where's the library?" you asked, keeping your voice level.
The Collector smiled—thin, patient, wrong. "Wherever you need it to be, Miss Cartographer. That's rather the point." He stepped aside, and the kitchen's warmth reached out like a hand. "Do come in. It's been waiting for you."
The pot on the stove boiled over, hissing into the fire.
